How to Draw: Vector Tutorial

I have always wanted to spread my love for art by teaching and showing others my work process. I have learned alot over the past few months about different styles and techniques used by various artists to pull off a flawless masterpiece. I recently started using the vector pen tool about a month ago and have grown to love it.
Below is my very first video tutorial I've created along with my very own original music, which is also my first track. I'm proud of both of these projects and hope this is a beginning of many tutorials.

The baby that I am drawing is an adorable young lad by the name of Jensen. He was so cute, I rushed at the chance to get a picture from his aunt to use in my next vector project.
Done in 3 hours
Created my very first, original beat using Pro Tools.

#theUpComersProject: Kyrie Irving

I was sitting in my brand new leather, office chair when I thought of the idea to improve my vector art skills by creating a collection of vector art of the top 10 up and coming prospects in all 4 major sports. #theUpComersProject
AHA! This gives me 10 "semi-practice" projects that will help me improve my craft. It also creates excitement on the web by seeing some of the most talented athletes in our country today, VECTOR STYLE!

The first person I wanted to vectorize was Kyrie Irving, the newly drafted point guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers, (if you didn't already know...). Why KI? Simply put, I've been involved in the game of basketball my entire life, in fact, I've been playing the game my entire life. It's who I am and what I once pursued with a fiery passion. Besides Kyrie has the potential to be one of the best point guards in the game, (as if the NBA need any more fantastic pg's). The League is full of amazing talent at the one position and Kyrie will definitely make his impact as the game has evolved into a "guards" era!

Below is the first vectorization of this exciting new project.

For the most part, I think it turned out well. I place the red values in the background to compliment the green jersey which gave it a nice "BOOM" effect. Now I guess it's time to start on the next composition, but I'm not sure who it should be yet..

should I look at the NFL's top prospects,

or maybe the MLB.. the hero of the 2011 World Series...

ummmm...Decisions, Decisions!

11.11.11

11.11.11 Veteran's Day! Hope everyone take a moment to reflect on those who have lost their lives fighting for our freedoms. Is it fair to say that we are fighting a war with no particular enemy?

While countless of our brothers and sisters are being killed, we continue about our everyday lives as if freedom is an obligation that we are owed.

So I thought to myself, how can I pay tribute to all the soldiers, men and women, who have given their lives for these freedoms that we take for granted. AHA! Why not come up with an inspirational portrait that will symbolize and convey the idea of the harsh realities of warfare. So above you is this attempt at capturing the emotions behind War on Terror!

BRI

Sitting in my brand new office chair, I thought, "what will be a good piece of work to go in my new portfolio for 2012. AHA! Do a vector portrait of my beautiful wife. Since I'm already practicing this new tool I've discovered (pen tool, go figure!), why not start an entire vector project. I'm thinking something big, but small simultaneously.

One of my favorite topics is sports, so maybe a nice collection of the top up-and-coming athletes. Whether top 10 or top 5, not sure at the moment, but Lord's willing, it's gonna happen, very soon might I add.

This is going to be an exciting journey, just the challenge of bursting onto the creative scene with a bang is exciting enough. I do art! That is the skill God, Himself and Him alone, has given me and by my life, I'm gonna use it for His glory. Whatever benefits He bless me with because of this, if any, is just a plus.

Back to the image above...

Vector is a new style I've just discovered only a week ago to this date. Seeing other artists use the selection and pen tools in incredible ways inspired me to play with the pen tool until I got a swing of things.

This vector took approximately 5 1/2 hours total, which is a better time than my first vector at nearly 8 (a marathon..!!!). I know, the more I practice and do portraits, the easier it'll get and I'll keep improving my progress and work flow. This journey (of being creative) is getting very interesting!

First Vector

This was my very first vector art after being inspired by ASEO and many other great vector artist. As many, when I first attempted to use the pen tool, I couldn’t quite grasp it, therefore, tried to delete it from my toolbox.
But after seeing the great potential it had via others vector artwork, my competitive nature arose and I gave it another shot, except this time… the finished product looks alot better than the first attempt. Kudos to vector artists throughout the world.

Beginning Anew

In late October 2010, I suddenly got the urge to pick up a pencil and create art again. It had been officially 7 to 9 months since I had last created any piece of art do to my short lived career attempt at playing professional basketball. After realizing God has given me a unique talent to use for His glory, I quickly got my act together and begin to create a host of designs and portraits. This picture is one of the first I created during this time and I begin to post them on Facebook. My professional career as an artist had begun.
